从2015年起，昆士兰小学7年级将变成中学的第一年。为确保这次平稳过渡，昆士兰政府准备在20个公立学校推行7年级并入中学1年级的试点计划。
Murrumba State Secondary College 将成为第一个进入该试点计划的公立中学。Murrumba 是昆士兰北海岸地区的一个新学校，它将在2012年1月为7年级和8年级学生开放。
从2013年到2015年，另外19个中学也将加入该试点计划。这些中学包括大型的城区的学校，也有小型的乡村和边远地区的学校。目前，加强与各小学的联系成了这些试点中学的重要议题。为支持7年级学生顺利转入中学，他们将与他们接洽的小学一起发展这个试点项目。
在2013年，初中的概念被介绍到那些有8年级和9年级的中学。
据昆士兰政府称，此项改革将使昆州在教育系统上与新州和维州接轨, 以确保昆州的学生在转入新的全国教学大纲中不会被落下。 此次试点学校包括：
* Clifton State High School, Darling Downs* Glenden State School, Mackay-Whitsundays* Toolooa State High School, Gladstone* Northern Beaches State High School, Townsville* Southport State High School, Gold Coast* Alexandra Hills State High School* Cleveland District State High School* Meridan State College, Caloundra* Bray Park State High School* Nambour State High School* Bremer State High School, Ipswich* The Gap State High School* Gordonvale State High School* The new school at Foxwell Road, Coomera* Gordonvale State High School * Springfield Central State High School, Ipswich* Varsity State College, Gold Coast* Crow’s Nest State School, Darling Downs* Glenmore State High School, Rockhampton* Mackay Northern Beaches State High School* Murrumba State Secondary College (to open in 2012).
