在过去的2010年,美国首次成为中国雅思考生选择的三大留学目的国之一。雅思考生中,有意前往美国和加拿大的人数增长了超过30%,远远地超过了整个出国留学市场的增长速度。据考生介绍,出现这样的增长与雅思考试本身的优势是分不开的,因为雅思考试注重沟通,能够在海外学习和生活技巧方面有效地帮助到他们。"另外,美国院校对雅思日益增长的认可也是造成这一现象的主要原因。从美国认可现状来看,目前有超过3,000所美国院校接受雅思成绩作为其主要的语言水平测试,并且这一数字还在持续增长。这其中包括90%以上的前120名院校,以及所有的常春藤盟校,考生可以有更广泛的选择。"雅思考试中国区业务总监史哲明先生介绍道。

2010年雅思考生呈现的另一个趋势就是留学国家的多元化。除了英国、美国、澳大利亚和加拿大这些传统的留学目的国,考生现在正从更广泛的范围内选择留学国家,包括荷兰、德国、法国、瑞士、马来西亚和新加坡等,其中选择中国香港的考生增长则超过了60%。

第三大趋势是雅思考生的低龄化,这一现象与整个留学市场低龄化的趋势是吻合的,在北京、上海、广州以及东部富裕地区这种趋势尤为明显。随着18岁以下出国人员数量剧增,注重交流性的雅思考试能够帮助这个年轻的群体提升自己的英语技能,同时更加顺利地完成语言和文化的过渡期。

The USA has grown dramatically as a study destination for IELTS candidates from China becoming one of the top three destinations for the first time this year. Sources at IELTS in China say that this trend reflects growing awareness among Chinese candidates that IELTS is welcome in the top US Universities.

The numbers of USA and Canada-bound candidates increased by over 30% in the last year, far beyond the overall market growth. According to candidates, the main reasons for this growing popularity are closely related to IELTS product features, which can help them in their overseas study and eventual life skills. "In addition, the increasing recognition by top US institutions is an important feature for Chinese applicants. Over 3,000 US institutions now accept IELTS as the foremost English proficiency examination, including over 90% of the top 120 ranked universities, and particularly all the so called Ivy League Universities," says James Shipton, Director for IELTS in China.

Apart from traditional destination countries such as the UK, USA, Australia, and Canada, there is an interesting and growing tendency for candidates to choose from a more persified range destination countries and regions such as the Netherlands, Germany, France, Switzerland, Malaysia, Singapore, etc. Hong Kong's growth rate is over 60%.

In line with the overall overseas study market IELTS candidates are getting younger, especially in big cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and affluent areas such as East China. The under 18 age group is growing fastest and IELTS is equipping this young group with the best communicative to assist them in making a smoother study transition overseas.

Over the past 2 decades, IELTS has seen its international testing system provide a platform for talented Chinese people to realize their dreams both at home and abroad. As a communicative test, IELTS has been recognised world-wide as a high quality English test, and emerged as the undisputed leader in English Language testing for overseas study or immigration purposes in China. According to figures provided by the Cultural and Education Section of the British Embassy, in 2010, IELTS maintained its growth trend with over 300,000 candidates nationwide. Its market leadership position seems to be unshakeable.

In order to satisfy the burgeoning demand, IELTS in China has focused on providing Chinese candidates with more convenient and better services, introducing several initiatives to provide additional convenience for the candidates' registration and tests. For example, candidates can now make a 'double booking' to register for two test sessions in one go, affording greater convenience for those candidates in need. Furthermore, IELTS continues to provide its free online preparation support -'Road to IELTS' - to all IELTS candidates and there are plans to extend this offer to potential IELTS takers to give them a better understanding of the test.
