Returning or entering New Zealand for the first time from affected areas

All staff and students returning from affected areas will contact (either by phone or by email) the nominated inpidual before they come onto the campus or Hall of Residence. The nominated inpidual will make an assessment as to whether the person is a low or high risk of transmitting the virus as per the attached checklist. Information on how to check for symptoms will be provided to staff and students. Halls of Residence will also be informed of the status of their residents.

If the staff member/student is assessed as being of low risk they will be directed to follow some cautionary procedures but will be able to attend classes or go to work.

If the person is assessed as being of high risk the staff member/student will be directed to stay at home, (this includes a Hall of Residence) 10-day for the incubation period, to follow cautionary procedures, and seek medical advice as required.

Cautionary procedures to follow for the 10-day incubation period

Stay at home as much as possible. Limit contact with other people, and avoid public places such as cinemas, shopping malls and public meeting places. For those assessed as high risk do not attend lectures or tutorials.

If you do need to miss classes, contact your Faculty Manager by email or phone as soon as possible to organise notes or to make alternative arrangements for any mandatory course requirements.

Maintain good personal hygiene 1.Cover nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing.

2. Dispose of used tissues

3.Keep hands clean and wash hands properly. Use liquid soap for hand washing and disposable towel for drying hands.

4.Wash hands after sneezing or coughing.

5.Avoid touching the eyes, nose and mouth.

6.Do not share towels or bed linen with anyone until these items have been washed with soap and hot water.

7.Use serving utensils at meal times

Avoid close contact with others and maintain a good level of personal space between you. This means avoid kissing, hugging, shaking hands or having sexual intercourse.

Avoid sharing bottles, cans, cigarettes, joints, lip balm, chocolate bars or other food

Keep home environment clean. Wipe furniture (including telephone) regularly (at least once a day) with a piece of towel soaked with diluted household bleach (i.e. adding 1 part of household bleach to 99 parts of water), and then wipe with a piece of towel soaked with water.

If you have been assessed as being high risk and are really concerned about transmitting the virus perhaps because you were in close contact with a person with SARS in one of the affected countries, wear a mask or a scarf across the mouth and ask other people sharing your house to do the same.
